About

Introducing Oh Yes! Photography

“Oh Yes!” was formerly known as “Life After Dark Photography,” established in 2010. If you have seen Life After Dark, this is still the same awesome photography business — just with a different name. I decided to change “Life After Dark” to a different name because I wanted my photography business to reflect more of who I currently am, and who I am becoming.

“Oh” implies a pause. It is the catch in our breath that enables us to reflect on what we want, what we’re doing, what we need in our lives. We build self awareness in this “oh” pause. “Oh” helps us acknowledge our fears, our reservations, our hesitation. Those are all okay, too.

Oh, I need love, but do I deserve it?
Oh, I want beauty in my life, but am I capable?
Oh, I want to be happy, but can I be?
Oh, I want to love myself, but am I worthy?
OH! I want a boudoir shoot, but I’m scared.

For me, this “Oh” pause is a reminder to myself that I can take time to breathe and figure out how to stay true to myself. I am a faith leaper, and sometimes I don’t always take that time to be okay with the pause, and the silence. To acknowledge that my fears and my hesitations are valid and important.

“YES!” is important because it affirms that we deserve what we want. Yes! I deserve happiness. Yes! I deserve love. Yes! I deserve a boudoir shoot. Yes! I will do it all.

Oh Yes! Photography was created for you, and for me. Say yes to this transformation in photographic art. Most women and couples come to me after taking a few breaths of “Oh…” By the time they book, they are ignited in the “YES!” stage. I welcome all these women, and couples. I see you. You deserve this. OH YES!

The Photographic Experience

Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Oh Yes! Photography specializes in boutique and high-end boudoir, portrait, and couples photography. From beginning to end, you are pampered with an experience of a lifetime, whether you’re coming in for yourself, with someone you love, or doing it as a gift for your partner. You can choose to have your shoot in my fully decorated chic-and-shabby boudoir studio in the Clayton Heights area of Surrey, BC, or we can have your shoot on location at a nearby outdoors area. This ranges between the beach, forest scene, lake, river, open field, and snow. You can expect to spend approximately 4 hours with me (not including travel time to locations) from beginning to end, and that doesn’t include all the nervous excitement and prep leading up to your shoot day!

The experience includes:

  • consultation
  • professional hair and makeup
  • 1-2 hour photo shoot (studio or outdoor)
  • Posing and guidance throughout the shoot
  • 1-2 hour in-person viewing and ordering session
  • Full editing of all presented and finished photos

At the end of your experience, you receive a package of beautifully made, high-end photos that last forever. These photos you can touch and see in your hands, and not just pasted in a CD of digital images that may never likely see the light of day, lost in a desk drawer to be forgotten until the next spring cleaning comes around. With “Oh Yes!” you will walk away seeing your photos in your hands, to be framed, or kept in a keepsake box in your shelf. You will also be presented with low-resolution digital photos for your media-sharing pleasure. Because really. What good is art if it cannot be seen, admired, and enjoyed on a regular basis?

A Little More About Helen

I can tell you all about how much I love art, and how I’ve always been more art-minded, versus science-minded (which is true). I can tell you about my really pretty camera and all the cool lens I got. I can even tell you where I learned my techniques, the different workshops I’ve taken, and how I’ve self-taught myself into having my own unique photographic eye. All these things can inform you that I am technically qualified for the job, but it doesn’t really tell you about who I am. After all, we know it is not the kitchen appliances that make the chef.

When I meet someone, I am accustomed to hearing their story, and knowing who they are underneath the layers of public knowledge. I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them beautiful, what makes them unique. You can say this comes from my experience and education as a Master’s level mental health therapist (aka a shrink). But I think it has more to do with my need for authentic and sincere connection with people. I love to know how we are all similar, and yet so different.

I want to identify what someone’s true beauty is. During this process of getting to know me, I get to know you. You tell me your story, your life, sometimes even your secrets. I build this tapestry of who you are, and I come to see you in the artistic angles that you show me. I can paint pictures of you with my camera. And that’s what comes out into the photos. I paint who are you with my camera.

When you hire me, you are hiring a flawed, unique, beautifully rich and sometimes broken girl-into-woman. I love my family with something fierce inside me. I am in love with the man I married, even after 20 years of being together — our times together feel like a short forever. I love the two girls we made together, with ingredients that include sugar and spice and yes, even everything nice. I love this perfect world we live in, with all its flaws and its beauty. I love the complex ways we feel and the joys and tears we make.

I am a fierce left-wing, human rights activist, with giant idealist values that include equal rights for all and hatred for none. I am a peace activist, and I’m outspoken about my values. I have very few enemies and it’s hard for me to say no to someone I care about. I like to make people happy. I like to see children smile. I like to sleep. My favorite shows are The Walking Dead (because it speaks to the complexity of the human spirit) and This Is Us (because it’s simply a feel-good show that makes me cry way too much). I’m sappy, I’m a hopeless romantic, and I believe in grand gestures.

And even if you don’t hire me, you would have a friend for life. So if you’re curious, and you want to know more, send me a ring and we’ll chat.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you do payment plans?

Yes! For those clients who are unable to pay for all their photos during the ordering session after their photo shoot, they can opt to be put on a payment plan. You can do up to 6 regular monthly payment plans. Payments must be made of at least $200 every month, and 5% interest will be added per month on the remaining invoice if 3 months have lapsed without a payment. You will get your products in their entirety when payment is completed in full.

Does the retainer/session fee include any photos or media images?

Retainer session fee of $500 does NOT include any photos. It is what you pay for my time and talent (up to 2 hours photo shoot), professional hair and makeup (I use that retainer fee to book your session and hire the hair and makeup artist), and the full use of my private studio or outdoor location. You purchase the photos afterwards at your ordering session one to two weeks after your photo shoot.

Why do you cost so much?

Consultation: 2-3 hours
Client-photographer face-to-face time: 2-3 hours
Ordering session: 1-2 hours
Editing time: 10 hours
Processing and ordering products: 3 hours

= TOTAL service per client: 18-22 hours

(Profit) – (service hours)/(cost of goods): I make approximately $15 per hour

This is a boutique photography business, as you can see. I am a custom photographer. I am an artist. You are the art form. You are worth every second I spend on you, and so am I.

How far in advance do I need to book with you?

I am currently booked about 1-5 months in advance. Please plan accordingly! It is not uncommon for people to book me up to 6 months in advance. I only take 5 sessions per month.

I book boudoir photo shoots on weekday evenings after work hours, or on the weekday during the day when it is planned at least 2-3 weeks in advance. Please fill in your best availability on the booking form!

How much does the average client spend?

From start to finish, the average person spends approximately $2000-$2500. The ultimate package costs approximately $5000. Additional a la carte prints and canvases can be purchased after the minimum package is chosen. The retainer session fee, which is $500, does NOT include products or pictures. It covers professional hair and makeup, approximately 3 hours of face to face time (1.5 to 2 of those hours is the photo shoot itself), and my time and talent, and the use of my decked out studio.

Why can’t I just order one or two prints?

Given the approximate 20+ hours I spend per client, it is no longer conducive for me to sell individual prints. Basic packages start at $1500 for 10 images in the form of metal prints, which includes low-resolution watermarked digital images made for media-sharing purposes. Individual images can be purchased at an a la carte style after the first package of 10 images. Thank you for understanding!

Can I buy high resolution digital images?

Yes, of course! High resolution images can be purchased separately, for an additional $900 per image. Keep in mind that all products include low-resolution watermarked images emailed to you for media-sharing purposes. These files do not come with printing rights. High resolution images are purchased for the purpose of printing into large wall art.

NOTE: High resolution files are the “original” pieces of art, therefore cost of purchase for an original size of each image will reflect this impact. When buying a high resolution file, you are buying the original artwork from the photographer. Choose wisely! 🙂

What should I bring to my session?

You should bring your own pretty panties, maybe a bra or two to match, high heel shoes (go HIGH or go home!), thigh high stockings or full length stockings, men’s shirts, ties, hats, babydolls, nightgowns, oversized white t-shirts, etc. Accessories can include long pearl necklaces, bracelets, earrings.

We have some wardrobe to accommodate, including sheer sheets and satin sheets. We have two high heel shoes in sizes 6.5 and 7.5/8. If you do not bring anything at all, we can even accommodate that! We’ll work what what you bring!

Can I buy unedited images for a lower cost?

Sorry, I do not offer unedited images for purchase. All unedited images go into my permanent hard drive and will be kept there for approximately 3 years before they get permanently deleted.

I have no idea how to pose. Will you help me?

Yes, I will pose you in your most flattering ways. If you have examples of the types of images/poses you want, we can definitely recreate them. Your job is to relax and have fun. My job is to make you feel and look good while doing it!

I have taken workshops and classes on how to pose. Every pose is carefully constructed to match your body type, and bring out your best features. Don’t worry! Have fun and let the sexiness flow through you.

I don’t like the way I look. How can you edit me?

Most of my editing come from my poses, so that I get your unique angles beautifully. Every woman’s or couple’s shapes are different, and my posing though generalized, are specialized to properly highlight your best parts. During the editing process, I smooth out all the edges and folds (that everyone has), but I do not generally add or take away pounds. During the ordering session, when I present the finished photos to you, you will have your final request in any extra editing that needs to be done.

Sometimes women will ask for some more nips and tucks, and I can accommodate!

What happens if I miss payments?

We expect that you make regular monthly payments, and at your ordering session, you will be requested to sign a legally binding document agreeing that all products sold and bought are final, and that you agree to pay in full, with no exceptions.

In the event that you go more than 2 months without a payment, your total remaining balance will increase with a 10% interest added. Every month following that, an additional 10% interest will be added. If after 6 months there are still no payments, the Oh Yes! team will give you the option to resume payment, or a small claims file will be made against you to collect the remaining balance.

Having said that, we understand emergency finances happen, and we are more than willing to discuss any changes without actually voiding or decreasing your total due.
