Introducing Oh Yes! Photography

“Oh Yes!” was formerly known as “Life After Dark Photography,” established in 2010. If you have seen Life After Dark, this is still the same awesome photography business — just with a different name. I decided to change “Life After Dark” to a different name because I wanted my photography business to reflect more of who I currently am, and who I am becoming.

“Oh” implies a pause. It is the catch in our breath that enables us to reflect on what we want, what we’re doing, what we need in our lives. We build self awareness in this “oh” pause. “Oh” helps us acknowledge our fears, our reservations, our hesitation. Those are all okay, too.

Oh, I need love, but do I deserve it?
Oh, I want beauty in my life, but am I capable?
Oh, I want to be happy, but can I be?
Oh, I want to love myself, but am I worthy?
OH! I want a boudoir shoot, but I’m scared.

For me, this “Oh” pause is a reminder to myself that I can take time to breathe and figure out how to stay true to myself. I am a faith leaper, and sometimes I don’t always take that time to be okay with the pause, and the silence. To acknowledge that my fears and my hesitations are valid and important.

“YES!” is important because it affirms that we deserve what we want. Yes! I deserve happiness. Yes! I deserve love. Yes! I deserve a boudoir shoot. Yes! I will do it all.

Oh Yes! Photography was created for you, and for me. Say yes to this transformation in photographic art. Most women and couples come to me after taking a few breaths of “Oh…” By the time they book, they are ignited in the “YES!” stage. I welcome all these women, and couples. I see you. You deserve this. OH YES!

The Photographic Experience

Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Oh Yes! Photography specializes in boutique and high-end boudoir, portrait, and couples photography. From beginning to end, you are pampered with an experience of a lifetime, whether you’re coming in for yourself, with someone you love, or doing it as a gift for your partner. My shoots primarily take place outdoors, in a natural setting, or in the studio space I shoot in located in South Surrey. These outdoor locations range between the beach, forest scene, lake, river, open field, and snow. You can expect to spend approximately 4 hours with me (not including travel time to locations) from beginning to end, and that doesn’t include all the nervous excitement and prep leading up to your shoot day!

The experience includes:

  • consultation
  • professional hair and makeup
  • 1-2 hour photo shoot (studio or outdoor)
  • Posing and guidance throughout the shoot
  • 1-2 hour in-person viewing and ordering session
  • Full editing of all presented and finished photos

At the end of your experience, you receive a package of beautifully made, high-end photos that last forever. These photos you can touch and see in your hands, and not just pasted in a CD of digital images that may never likely see the light of day, lost in a desk drawer to be forgotten until the next spring cleaning comes around. With “Oh Yes!” you will walk away seeing your photos in your hands, to be framed, or kept in a keepsake box on your shelf. You will also be presented with low-resolution digital photos for your media-sharing pleasure. Because really. What good is art if it cannot be seen, admired, and enjoyed on a regular basis?

A Little More About Helen

I can tell you all about how much I love art, and how I’ve always been more art-minded, versus science-minded (which is true). I can tell you about my really pretty camera and all the cool lens I got. I can even tell you where I learned my techniques, the different workshops I’ve taken, and how I’ve self-taught myself into having my own unique photographic eye. All these things can inform you that I am technically qualified for the job, but it doesn’t really tell you about who I am. After all, we know it is not the kitchen appliances that make the chef.

When I meet someone, I am accustomed to hearing their story, and knowing who they are underneath the layers of public knowledge. I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them beautiful, what makes them unique. You can say this comes from my experience and education as a Master’s level mental health therapist (aka a shrink). But I think it has more to do with my need for authentic and sincere connection with people. I love to know how we are all similar, and yet so different.

I want to identify what someone’s true beauty is. During this process of getting to know me, I get to know you. You tell me your story, your life, sometimes even your secrets. I build this tapestry of who you are, and I come to see you in the artistic angles that you show me. I can paint pictures of you with my camera. And that’s what comes out into the photos. I paint who are you with my camera.

When you hire me, you are hiring a flawed, unique, beautifully rich and sometimes broken girl-into-woman. I love my family with something fierce inside me. I am in love with the man I married, even after 20 years of being together — our times together feel like a short forever. I love the two girls we made together, with ingredients that include sugar and spice and yes, even everything nice. I love this perfect world we live in, with all its flaws and its beauty. I love the complex ways we feel and the joys and tears we make.

I am a fierce left-wing, human rights activist, with giant idealist values that include equal rights for all and hatred for none. I am a peace activist, and I’m outspoken about my values. I have very few enemies and it’s hard for me to say no to someone I care about. I like to make people happy. I like to see children smile. I like to sleep. My favorite shows are The Walking Dead (because it speaks to the complexity of the human spirit) and This Is Us (because it’s simply a feel-good show that makes me cry way too much). I’m sappy, I’m a hopeless romantic, and I believe in grand gestures.

And even if you don’t hire me, you would have a friend for life. So if you’re curious, and you want to know more, send me a ring and we’ll chat.
